(dpa) - Tourist arrivals increased 4.6 per cent in Thailand during the first quarter of 2007, compared with the same period last year, while earnings rose 11 per cent to reach 150 billion baht ($4.3 billion), the tourism minister said Friday.

Sports and Tourism Minister Suvit Yodmanee said the markets that brought the strongest growth were Europe, Oceania, South Asia, and South Africa.

"The Middle East, in particular, brought an increased number of tourists, rising slightly over 30 per cent compared to the same period last year," he told the state-run Thai News Agency.

Airport work going too slowly

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont visited Suvarnabhumi airport on Thursday and said he was not satisfied with the delays in solving problems that range from cracks on runways and taxiways to safety at the terminal and contract disputes with duty-free monopoly King Power International Group.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont was not satisfied yesterday with the problem-solving delays at Suvarnabhumi airport by Airports of Thailand (AoT).

Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um quoted the prime minister as saying there had been no concrete solutions over the past seven months to the problems at the new airport.

Bangkok Airports to Start Enforcing Ban on Liquids, Aerosols and Gels

Thailand will start enforcing new restrictions on liquids, aerosols and gels in hand-carried luggage on all commercial flights departing from airports nationwide in the next few weeks.

Thailand is the latest Asian country to begin applying the security measures suggested by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) following the discovery of a terrorist plot in Britain last year.

Major Asian air hubs such as South Korea’s Incheon International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport implemented the measures earlier this year, while Singapore Changi Airport is due to apply them from May 8.

Public Taxi Stands Will Relocate to The Second Floor (Arrivals Level)

Submitted by admin on

Suvarnabhumi airport is preparing to relocate public taxi stands to the second floor of the main airport building, on the same floor as the arrivals terminal, pushing out influential private limousine operators.

Suvarnabhumi airport director Serirat Prasutanond said yesterday that taxi stands would move up from the frontal road on the first floor of the passenger terminal to the second floor after the Songkran festival ends on April 17.

Passengers arriving at the airport exit from immigration and customs checks on the second floor of the new Bangkok airport building.

The Don's agreed, but is it Muang or Mueang?

Submitted by admin on

As the old airport in North Bangkok prepares to reopen for certain domestic flights tomorrow , a new question has emerged. But this is not about runways or possible transfer headaches. Instead, it's about how to spell the name of the airport using the Roman alphabet. Passers-by might be surprised to see signs at the domestic terminal, saying Don Mueang instead of Don Muang, as it had always been written in the past.

The confusion over the spelling is clear in promotional materials of the national carrier, Thai Airways International. A recent advertisement in local newspapers cited the name of the airport using the new spelling, but the airline's website is spelling it the old way. The ad says ''Smooth as silk via Don Mueang for THAI domestic flights,'' but a headline on the website reads: ''THAI announces domestic operations at Don Muang airport.''
