The northern provinces of Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai have been declared disaster zones, as the number of people with respiratory problems has soared amid continuing forest fires and thick haze.

"The declaration will facilitate anti-haze operations and create public awareness of the necessity of the ban on burning activities," Deputy Prime Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham said yesterday.

วันนี้ (20 มี.ค.) บรรยากาศที่ท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพ (ดอนเมือง) เป็นไปอย่างคึกคัก โดยมีเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ปฏิบัติงานทั้งจากบริษัท ท่าอากาศยานไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) หรือ ทอท.ซึ่งเป็นผู้ดูแลสถานที่และเจ้าหน้าที่ 3 สายการบิน ประกอบด้วย สายการบินไทย สายการบิน วัน ทู โก โอเรียนท์ไทย และสายการบินนกแอร์ เข้าเตรียมความพร้อมสถานที่ภายในอาคารผู้โดยสารภายในประเทศ ซึ่งจะถูกใช้เป็นอาคารผู้โดยสารสำหรับการเปิดเที่ยวบินเชิงพาณิชย์อีกครั้ง ของ 3 สายการบินดังกล่าว ในวันที่ 25 มีนาคมนี้

Airports of Thailand will need government money to buy out residents who want to move away from the aircraft noise of Suvarnabhumi airport, with total compensation payments estimated at 121.5 billion baht - more than $3.4 billion.

The company has completed its estimates of compensation for owners of property to the north and south of the eastern and western runways, an Airports of Thailand (AoT) source said yesterday.

About one billion baht will be offered to schools, hospitals, government agencies and public places around the new airport, the source said.

Singapore (dpa) - Asia's top performing airport in passenger and cargo traffic is Tokyo's Haneda handling more than 65 million passengers last year, data from the Airports Council International (ACI) said on Tuesday.

Beijing, Hong Kong and Bangkok followed, all ahead of Singapore, which has shown slower growth.

Tokyo's passenger traffic was a modest increase of 3 per cent over the previous year, said the ACI's findings published in The Straits Times.

Nok Air will shift all of its 58 daily flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport back to Don Muang on March 24, 2007 one day ahead of the Don Muang's official reopening.

The Thai Airways International (THAI) subsidiary will man eight check-in and three ticket-sales counters there. Two of the ticketing counters will be located on the departure level and the other one in the arrival hall.

Bangkok's private hospitals are moving to maximize their presence at the new airport and to bring in new business.

Bumrungrad International last week opened a new airport service centre at Suvarnabhumi, while Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital is scheduled to open the first medical center to be run by a private hospital at the airport next week.

Services for domestic direct flights at former Bangkok international airport at Don Muang can start from March 25, a senior official affirmed Sunday.

Flight Lieutenant Pinit Saraithong, general manager of Don Muang Airport, said senior officials from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports met Friday and agreed that airlines which are operating domestic direct flights at Suvarnabhumi could start operations at Don Muang from March 25 on a voluntary basis. International flights can also switch to operate at Don Muang if they wish.

Star Alliance of airlines has thrown its support behind Bangkok's new but problem-plagued Suvarnabhumi Airport as remaining the hub of operations for its nine member airlines, the alliance said Friday.

"We fully endorse the policy of our home carrier and founding member, Thai Airways International, to retain its hub operations at Suvarnabhumi Airport," Jaan Albrecht, Star Alliance chief executive officer, said in a press statement made available Friday.
