AoT to be asked to shorten security contract

A working group of Airports of Thailand (AoT) will today ask the board to shorten the contract of the Loxley-ICTS consortium for security services at Suvarnabhumi airport, due to alleged inefficiency. After evaluating the security service at the airport, the panel, led by Suvarnabhumi deputy director Chaturongkapol Sodmanee, has recommended to the AoT board that the 10-year contract be cut to three years first and then extended twice, each time for one year, according to a source at the airport agency.

It says AoT should later stop the service by the consortium and stage a new bidding contest to find another contractor, the source added.

Although the consortium has improved its service, it was still not good enough, the working group found.

The panel met representatives of the Loxley-ICTS consortium on July 16 and asked the firm to seek the immediate termination of its own contract.

When the representatives rejected the proposal, the AoT panel suggested a shortened service time.

The consortium complained that the shortened deal would affect its investment plan.

The source admitted that such a change in the contract would need the consent of both partners.

Karn Thongyai, managing director of Asia Security Management Co, which is part of the Loxley-ICTS consortium, declined to comment on the AoT working group's proposal.

He said the firm would wait for the AoT board's decision today before making any comment.

Mr Karn said that his consortium had done its best, followed all directives of AoT to improve the security service and accepted new evaluation criteria by the airport agency.
